Aikido for Kids
Building confidence, discipline, and character through martial arts
Aikido is a martial (budo) art from Japan that focuses on developing balance, movement, and cooperation. For children, Aikido is much more than just physical training – it is a comprehensive developmental path that helps shape both body and character.
Training develops a child's coordination, balance, overall physical fitness, and body awareness. Regular practice improves reaction speed, flexibility, strength, and teaches controlled and safe movement in space. Concentration also develops, as learning techniques requires attention and precision.
In addition to physical development, Aikido teaches important values. Training cultivates discipline, respect, and responsibility. Children learn mindfulness, consideration for classmates, and the customs and etiquette of the training hall (dojo). Aikido emphasizes peacefulness and self-control – the goal is not to defeat an opponent, but to solve situations in a balanced and safe manner.
Aikido helps children develop self-confidence and teaches them how to stay calm in difficult situations. At the same time, patience and persistence are learned, as acquiring new techniques requires time and practice.
At Taikikai, we welcome children starting from age 9. If a child is mentally and physically ready, they may exceptionally start earlier. Taikikai considers it important that children follow the rules in the training hall, listen carefully to the instructor's guidance, and approach training with respect and dedication.
We also encourage parents to explore Aikido and its related customs and traditions at home with the child before starting training. This way, the child can better understand what the dojo rules are, why respect for classmates and instructors is important, and what Aikido training really entails.
