Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo
Traditional Japanese sword art in Tallinn
Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo is a classical Japanese sword school (koryu) founded around 1600 by Mima Yoichizaemon Kagenobu. The art combines iai - the practice of drawing and cutting with the sword - with kenpo, paired forms where techniques are applied against a partner armed with a bokken.
Training begins with the fundamental kata of the school, practiced with an iaito (training sword) or bokken (wooden sword). Through repeated, precise practice we study correct posture, grip, cutting angles and the mental focus that define traditional Japanese swordsmanship.
All adults are welcome to start - no previous martial arts experience is required. Training takes place in a calm, focused atmosphere, and beginners are guided step by step through the etiquette and basics of the sword.
At Taikikai, Suio Ryu practice complements our Aikido curriculum: the sword work deepens understanding of distance, timing and centered movement that are at the heart of both arts.
